Conserve energy during peak usage times to save on your electric bill, lower energy costs and increase grid reliability for our community.

What is the Power Saver program?

In the heat of summer, energy costs and electricity demand can rise along with the temperature. To help manage this high demand for energy, Austin Energy is asking select customers to participate in our Power Saver program. This program notifies participants in advance of Peak Energy Demand Days and asks them to save power. The program is completely voluntary, and how much you reduce your electric use is completely up to you.

What is a Peak Energy Demand Day?

A Peak Energy Demand Day happens when the demand for electricity is anticipated to be especially high, typically on the hottest summer days. This rising demand often means rising wholesale energy costs.

By using less energy on these peak days, Power Saver participants can help lower energy costs for our community. The Power Saver program notifies participants before expected Peak Energy Demand Days so they can plan ahead.

Why was I selected to participate?

Austin Energy randomly selected customers from all areas of the utility’s service territory. Customers who opt-out will not be able to rejoin the Power Saver program in 2025.

How does it work?

Power Saver participants will receive a notification on or before a Peak Energy Demand Day, asking them to save energy between 1 to 7 p.m. and offering tips on how to do so.

Following a Peak Energy Demand Day, you’ll receive another notification, letting you know how much energy you used and how your home compared to similar homes in your neighborhood.

How will I receive Power Saver notifications?

Power Saver notifications are available through email, text message or phone call. You can manage your Power Saver communication preferences – or opt-out of the program entirely – by visiting the Notifications section of your City of Austin Utilities online account.

How do I save energy?

Take simple steps to reduce your electric use:

  • Minimize appliance use: Delay using larger appliances like your dryer or dishwasher until after a Peak Energy Demand Day is over.
  • Raise your thermostat temperature: Adjusting your thermostat by just a few degrees can make a big difference!
  • Use fans and reduce AC use: Using fans and keeping blinds and curtains closed are great ways to help cool your home.

Even small changes can make a big difference on Peak Energy Demand Days.
